It goes without saying—but we can’t say it enough—that 2020 was a year of enormous change. As the yoga community continues to absorb and integrate these changes, including the potential for virtual offerings to remain prevalent, it’s integral that we continue to usher in new support systems for yoga professionals. One of the most important ways a yoga professional can be supported in their career is by holding professional liability insurance. It may seem like a superfluous extra financial burden, but in the words of Joe Fagan, Director of Strategic Partnerships at BeYogi, in the off-chance that it’s needed, it’s really needed. “Claims are few and far between, which is a good thing,” he says.
But according to Fagan, when BeYogi did an audit of what most insurance claims paid out, the payout was rarely less than four figures—and typically payouts were in the five- and six-figure range. “So a single event that happens to a single person could be completely awful, and, well, career-changing,” says Fagan. “While 99% of people will never use their liability insurance, for the 1%, it’s life-changing.”
Why BeYogi Insurance
Yoga Unify members have access to a deep discount to BeYogi liability insurance—35% off an annual subscription. This subscription comes with all the regular perks of any BeYogi member, including the ability to create a free professional website, discounts on online yoga memberships, courses, and trainings, and discounts on great yoga products. There’s also the perk of having access to $10 medical telehealth appointments, and access to a BeYogi health and dental insurance marketplace, that, depending on your location and income, may have lower-cost insurance plans than are available in the national marketplace.
But what sets BeYogi apart from other yoga liability insurance offerings is that it’s an occurrence-from policy rather than a claims-made policy. The vast majority of low-cost liability insurance plans out there for yoga teachers are claims-made policies, meaning that any claim eligible for a payout must be made within the duration of the policy. Say, for example, your policy is April 1, 2021–March 31, 2022, and a student experiences an injury in early March, 2022. If the student doesn’t file a claim until the first week of April, the policy would not cover that payout. BeYogi is an “occurrence-from” policy, meaning that any accident, injury, or claim is viable, as long as it occurred during the policy coverage.
Answering the Needs of a New Yoga Landscape
The other important thing that sets BeYogi policies apart from other liability insurance brokers is that it covers virtual on-demand classes. While a few other insurance providers have moved to include live virtual teaching in their policies, BeYogi is the only one to offer unrestricted coverage for on-demand virtual teaching.
Before the pandemic, BeYogi covered live online training, but “once the pandemic hit, there was a massive amount of people who were immediately pivoting their business to doing live-online,” says Fagan. “The fact that we had live online coverage already gave us a head start.” Fagan and his team worked around the clock to offer on-demand coverage as well, as he anticipated its prevalence. Not only were they able to pull it off, “we were able to offer it at no additional charge—and it doesn’t appear that there’s going to be an additional charge in the future.”
What Makes This Special for Yoga Unify Members
“Candidly,” says Fagan, “the program that we set up with Yoga Unify is far and away the lowest-cost policy we’ve ever put out in the marketplace for yoga by far.” Again, BeYogi isn’t just insurance, but a membership-organization that offers tons of awesome perks, and their team is invested in the community.
“[Co-founder] Heather [Titus] really had a vision for this whole organization, and we wanted to be a part of it,” says Fagan. “The more we learned about the marketplace,” he says, “the more we learned that there were a lot of folks who were somewhat disenfranchised.” Fagan says that it was clear that Yoga Unify had the right vision to start addressing that. “I think the entire universe wants somebody to oversee and to make certain that the schools are teaching well.
